Knysna Extreme is an extreme triathlon covering 5km swim, 174km cycle, 50km run with an altitude gain of over 3,300m. The route is scenic yet challenging taking athletes along the Garden Route.

Each athlete is required to have a supporter follow them on the entire route, providing nutritional, motivational and mechanical support to their athlete.

Extreme Triathlons are taking athletes back to the basics for triathlons. It is a growing event in Europe and fast becoming the pinnacle of the triathlon circuit. An Extreme Triathlon is designed to push athletes to their limits but taking them on a journey along the way. Letting them Swim, Cycle and Run in places they would not normally race at.

The Knysna Extreme is the first such event in South Africa and on the African continent and has attracted interest both locally and internationally. It is a small field of only 200 athletes making it a very unique and family feel event.

Athletes have from 05h00 until midnight (00:00) to complete the 229 km route. The event starts at 05h00 on Thesen Island with athletes swimming a 5km circular route. Transition (Swim to Cycle) will take place on Thesen Island at the SAN Parks Jetty. Athletes will then cycle the 174 km from Knysna, along the N2 through Sedgefield, Wilderness and into George. They then climb over Outeniqua Pass and cycle to the transition point at Avontuur / Uniondale (Cycle to Run). Athletes are then required to run 50km to the Finish Line at Diepwalle Forest Station.

Each Athlete will have a GPS tracker providing live tracking to spectators at the Hospitality Area in Knysna. Local business will gain from the influxe of visitors, various activations have been planned with local industries and all operational requirements (Medics, Security, Volunteers, etc) are from Knysna and surrounding area.
