Gansbaai Backpackers is situated in centre of the Shark Diving Capitol of the world, Gansbaai or Gansbay which is a short 2 hour drive from Cape Town. Gansbaai is part of the Whale Coast with the Walker Bay Whale Sanctuary providing a nursery to Southern Right, Bryde and Humpback Whales, which are easily observed from the shore or a boat-based whale watching tour.

Dyer Island is a breeding colony for Jackass Penguins and Cape Fur Seals. The narrow Channel between Geyser Rock and Dyer Island is home to around 60 000 Cape Fur Seals and is a feeding ground of the endangered Great White Shark.
